COVID-19 Update 03.06.2020

The Center for Disease Control broadcast a telebriefing on Tuesday morning about the inevitable spread of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus) and COVID-19 (the disease) in the United States. You can find a link to the briefing below. The purpose of this post is to provide you with the resources for prevention, treatment, and public health awareness. Should you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to reach out. It’s best to reach me by text at 323.459.6152 – anytime!

Epidemiological Data / CDC Advice

Here is the link to the CDC Briefing for which a transcript is also now available. Please note that the consensus is that the spread of the virus in the US is not a question of IF but a question of WHEN. Of most concern is community spread (cases of COVID-19 that are appearing without a known source of exposure). The CDC is probably providing the most up to date and reliable information at this point (as opposed to news channels or anecdotal information). Also if you want to monitor the global spread of the virus and disease I recommend this map updated by John Hopkins Hospital. Bear in mind that many cases are mild and go unreported or are masked by the seasonal flu. Also carriers can be asymptomatic for up to 14 days.

Prevention & Clinic Policy

Prevention for this illness is the same as for the seasonal flu. Thorough hand washing is paramount as is social distancing (avoiding crowds and individuals). For an easier read than the CDC jargon here’s an article in the New York Times that we found worth reading: How to prepare for the Coronavirus. Also because the CDC anticipates disruption with schools, transportation, and workplace here’s an easy read from NPR helping you prepare if you have to stay in isolation at home: A Guide – How to Prepare Your Home for the Corona Virus. Please note that if you live in SoCal most of these measures are equally important for earthquake preparedness! Please remember: stay at home if you are sick. Reach out if you need care. It is imperative that community spread is stopped and one reason why the flu is so active every year is that Americans simply can’t stay away from work or school! We are providing teleconsultations and delivering TCM formulas and other supplements to alleviate symptoms.

In our clinic in Santa Monica we will screen for potential vectors as we need to protect patients who are at higher risk of illness should they contract the virus (elderly, children, immunocompromised patients, pregnant women, etc), as well as ourselves. If you have flu-like symptoms we recommend you communicate this to us and we will take care of you (we have built an arsenal of formulas to treat the flu as well as COVID-19). We recommend however that you remain in self-isolation and avoid going out to prevent contaminating others, public health is everyone’s responsibility. We will come to treat you at your home with acupuncture and supplements if you are sick and don’t require admission to a higher level of care like a hospital (see below COVID-19 TCM Treatment). Should you need to cancel your appointment because of flu-like symptoms you will not be charged the cancellation fee if you talk to us on the phone.

COVID-19 TCM Treatment

SARS-nCoV-2 originated in China: from the onset of the outbreak, Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) has been used in Wuhan along with Western treatments to achieve a 90% recovery rate. Interestingly enough the old Chinese texts are still valid today: the Chinese have learned to treat similar warm febrile diseases for thousands of years. Reports from China indicate that herbal therapy and acupuncture are effective in treating COVID-19, at least in the early stages of the disease.

We already have stockpiled the formulas and single compounds that are indicated for the various presentations and stages of the disease (“One disease, many manifestations – One manifestation, many diseases” is an ever-present saying in Chinese medicine). One size doesn’t fit all and every patient is treated differently as usual. We start with a diagnosis and treat the pattern accordingly. Please note: TCM is not to be used in place of Western medicine but rather to be integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan utilizing both Western and Chinese medicine to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Furthermore, patients are advised not to self treat or use the formulas blindly, but rather to consult with licensed medical practitioners to ensure optimal treatment on a case by case basis.

I summarized the different patterns in the table and it’s available on request (licensed practitioners only).

Acupuncture improves quality of life for allergic asthma patients

A large randomized controlled trial involving 1445 patients with allergic asthma found that an integrative medicine approach in which acupuncture is added to routine care demonstrated improvements in both quality of life and physical and mental health.
